KULTIVATOR - BARNDOMENS STIGAR (APM 9201) CD 50mI'm often highly sceptical about bands with highly blown reputations, especially ones with seemingly outrageous price-tags. Experience has it that most such albums are big disappointments. But not so with Kultivator, this CD reissue was certainly a phenomenal surprise. It is strange that this 1980 release passed me by first time round. The first release on the constantly intriguing Bauta Records, I would have expected Recommended Records to have handled it. But maybe they missed it too? A great crime really, as Kultivator offered some of the finest music to emerge out of Sweden in the 80's.In Kultivator's music one can detect lots of influences at play, especially elements of Zamla Mammaz Manna and a uniquely Swedish style of arrangements. Their sound however was not at all easy to describe, as it sat uncomfortably at the edge of rock, drawing on jazz and folk musics as well as a vast variety of ethnic, classical and other touches. The best description I could simply muster is a blend of Hatfield & The North, Cos and Magma in a music that is constantly surprising, jitterbugging from one type of music to another in dazzlingly complex and inventive compositions. As a special treat, the CD also contains two bonus tracks; one recorded a year before the album, the other a track originally composed for the album but previously unreleased, recorded by a reformed Kultivator in 1992, and surprisingly (despite the twelve year delay) an authentic sound totally in character with the other recordings. All told, quite an extraordinary release!review by Alan Freeman in Audion magazine #25 (June 1993)
