This RETROSPECTIVE of Laurent Garnier's career certainly hits all the high points of his considerable back catalogue, from his early techno days with "Acid Eiffel" to more recent jazz work before he closed up his label F Communications, like the slow dub of "Theme from Larry's Dub." Garnier's range is impressively expansive, from the driving tech of "Crispy Bacon" and "Sambou" to the more house-oriented and the electro jitter of "Communications from the Lab" to the moody breaks of "Jeux D'Enfants" or smoky jazz of "Barbiturik Blues." He even touches on an industrial soundscape with "Astral Dreams" and lets loose a pure stormer on "Raw Cuts." But we also get some of his collaborations, such as "6 Months Earlier" with Llorca (as Maral Chingus" or his remixes. His take on Alex Attias' "10,000 Leagues," for instance, gives that track and twitchy, underwater feel, while he gives Carl Craig's "Demented" a spare dub. DJ Marky's "Butterfly" gets some juicy jazz-step, while Elegia's "Basic" becomes an atmospheric stomper. He also takes a good remixing too, like on Avril's mysterious mix of "Greed." But he'll always be remember most for his own work, like the ambient drift of "Le Voyage De Simone," and rightly so.
