I attended this event at The Haçienda on Oct. 4th 1982. When I arrived, quite early, Burroughs was already reading. There was a lot of noise from the bars so it lacked atmosphere sadly. John Giorno did a reading and there was some films and stuff from Psychic TV but I don't remember much about that. I really wanted my copy of William Burroughs* - Call Me Burroughs signed so I nipped behind the stage and asked if I could see Mr Burroughs. They said he'd be out in the cafe area for a brief while. When he came out I sat beside him and tried to engage him in a bit of light conversation but he wasn't really feeeling it. He signed my record though - and my copy of Naked Lunch, both of which I still possess.I was an early member of The Haçienda in 1982. In those days it was virtually empty most nights - even when there was a decent band on, not many people came. It was quite cold and stark in there too. A bit like having a drink in a dark multi-storey car park at night.I saw some good acts playing to small audiences: John Cale, Klaus Schulze, The Fall and a few others I now can't recall. By the acid house years the club obviously took off - but those early days were quiet. Come to think of it - there was a reasonable crowd for the Final Academy night but, then again, it was an unusual event.
