The return of Crimson Glory minus singer MidnightReleased in 1999, ASTRONOMICA is the fourth and most recent studio album by Florida’s Crimson Glory. The band’s style is American power metal with elements of pop rock and prog. They’re akin to Led Zeppelin, but taken to the next level with a late 80s/90s vibe. Their previous album STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL opted for a GnR or 90’s Bride style, which wasn’t profitable and turned off fans of their first two albums. As such, ASTRONOMICA returns to the style of 1988’s TRANSCENDENCE, but with a heavier ethic and a new singer, Wade Black. Many Crimson Glory fans reject this album because of the absence of original vocalist Midnight, but the band was forced to enlist a new singer because Midnight wasn’t interested and wasn’t in good enough physical condition anyway (he prematurely died in 2009 at the age of 46). While Black has similarities to Midnight, he’s not as smooth and has a penchant for screaming. I think he was a good fit for the band and gave this album a sound that separates it from the group’s former output. ASTRONOMICA starts with a quality marching instrumental, which is the prologue to the album. The top two tracks for me are “New World Machine” and the title track, but they’re very different. The former is catchy kick-axx USPM in the mold of the heavier cuts from TRANSCENDENCE while “Astronomica” begins with a vibe more akin to the title track from TRANSCENDENCE before switching to heavier GnR-meets-Zeppelin riffin’.The album features five other quality cuts (“Edge of Forever,” “Touch the Sun,” “Lucifer’s Hammer,” “The Other Side of Midnight” and “Cydonia”), but – really – the entire album is worthy from beginning to end. If you’re a fan of TRANSCENDENCE, or power metal in general, ASTRONOMICA is a must. You just have to be open to Wade’s dynamic new style. This is Crimson Glory with a more modern, heavier sound and is easily their second best album, even perhaps on par with the heralded TRANSCENDENCE, just different. GRADE: A-
