This is one of the most incredibly interesting, intricate, unique, and layered musical documents that I’ve experienced. And not just the music itself- the physical artwork/packaging is just as deserving of every one of those descriptors I used in the previous sentence. For real. (I need to upload some pictures here..)Used to listen to this allll the time when I still had a CD player at the ready. Music for many a mood. Not to mention the songs are catchy as hell and musicianship is near-virtuoso level. Check Nate Kinsella lit as fuck on the drum kit (a regular-ass, traditional rock drum set, I must note— so far the only recordings I’ve heard of this actually, since he switched to his crazy-unique, tambo-hatted, roto-tom’d, Wurlitzer-centered hybrid drum/electric piano kit for Make Believe right after this band.. I digress...)Really though this is some amazing, darkly melodic post-punk/math rock/indie here, with tons of really cool electronic flourishes/manipulations throughout the whole thing (***This is the only record I’ve heard in this genre featuring a legit turntabalist cutting shit up, and it works!! [closest I can think of being Modest Mouse’s “Never Ending Math Equation”] — Actually, it’s sick as fuck!***). This album’s a warmly hi-fidelity, hyper-layered listening experience. It’s actually real shame Decembers Architects hasn’t got more recognition. I feel like a lot of people would dig on this but haven’t heard it because of it’s limited pressing and the band’s obscurity (even with Nate’s more recent success as Birthmark, and as a core member of Make Believe [who is also still under-appreciated as fuck tho...] and his time in Joan of Arc).Yo, if you like shit like Cap’n Jazz and Radiohead, and dig on some Aphex Twin occasionally, and you see one of these for sale, do what Redman said and “Pick it up! Pick it up!” ;)
