OK...............perhaps haujobb promised Cleopatra an EP way back when and Cleo just kept on pressuring them to deliver? Who really knows why this exists? I don't at any rate, but being a fairly consistent fan of Haujobb I did pick it up. Of course, my first suspicion when I saw this popping up on iTunes as a searched in vain for "new world march" was "is this even haujobb?" well, yes, it is. Four cover songs, selected seemingly randomly out of a hat... with two being from popular "electronica" artists and 2 being from popular "alternative" artists. I suspect these songs were recorded many moons ago, and likely Cleopatra sat on them for years before releasing them, and I also suspect the band did not really want them out there, but this is all speculation. They are odd songs to pick. Smack my bitch up fares well, and despite me hating the original, haujobb do a decent job of re-interpreting it in a techno haujobb style. The speed of pain kind of sucks, as it does not translate well to an electronic version. Daniel sings the lyrics like he is just merely going through the motions. Hymn is instrumental to start with, and they retain the piano line and build a techno track around it. It’s "ok". die eier von satan is probably the strongest on this set, sounding like it could have come from freeze frame reality. I really don't know what else to say. It’s interesting, and because it was cheap, I don't really regret buying it, and it's an interesting oddity in haujobb's discography, but it is far, far away from their best work. For obvious reasons, I’m not surprised that it is on Cleopatra, which in many ways is like the wal-mart of independent music labels: occasional good deals drowned out with waves and waves of shitty product. Caveat emptor.
