This is probably my favourite Birth Control album. That said, I feel it's the most progressive sounding of all their releases. Sure there's plenty of hard rockin' guitar & keyboard interplay found here as well. This mixed with just the right balance of progressive rock makes it the perfect Birth Control album for this fan.From the opening 15 minutes of side 1, most familiar with Birth Control's efforts to this point will notice a difference right away, with an almost Gentle Giant approach to structure and composition. There's even elements of symphonic progressive rock found within these grooves; classical guitar, mellotron, ARP synth string ensembles, etc. At times Zeus B. Held's keyboard work has an eerie similarity to that of Kerry Minnear's of Gentle Giant. This similarity was never so strong on any previous Birth Control album, or later release for that matter.Try to find the original vinyl pressing on Brain, as I feel it out performs either of the CD reissues on Green Tree or Repertoire. Highly recommended.
