This album was recorded at the Townhouse Studios, London, England, summer 1980.
The slightly unusual credits read that Colin Moulding 'sings his songs and plays his Epiphone Newport'. Dave Gregory is credited with 'the odd vox humana or two'. Andy Partridge is credited with playing 'His own voice, a guitar he thinks he owns, a synth he's not sure who owns and other noises that could have been anybody's'.

All bonus tracks have appeared as B sides to the 'Generals And Majors' single at different times and in different countries. Track 14 is the only track not recorded during the 'Black Sea' sessions.
Writing credits are taken from the inside front of the booklet, Andy Partridge is mis-credited there as having written track 12.
