I wish the solo guitar parts on "Coldwater Canyon" had a clearer musical intent; as they are, they remind me too much of what one is subjected on a random Friday afternoon at Guitar Center. Otherwise, I really like this album.

After all those years (I bought the double vinyl around '78), this is still my favourite TD release since it has all their qualities and few weaknesses. For a live recording, the four pieces sound astonishingly composed, not improvised. I think there has been some editing... There are no 10-min-directionless noodlings before something interestings happens, and the sound quality is reasonable (BTW, both are the disadvantages of many of the Tangerine Tree/Leaves recordings). All four pieces are very different in style.The first piece 'Cherokee Lane' may be the quintessence of TD in the 70s - typical sequences, mellotron, warm moog sounds. The way Chris Franke switches the sequencers between 2 to five steps is phenomenal. The following 'Monolight' has a piano and some (unfortunately quite distorted) cymbal sounds at the beginning, which are followed by an almost pop-like intermezzo, until another sequencer-based section starts and leasts until the end. The third one, 'Coldwater Canyon', is a continuous flow of the sequencers with a very pulsating guitar by Froese, which I find rather unique for a TD recording. The final piece 'Desert Dream' features cold and hypnotic sounds, a sound cloud almost without rhythmn, almost menacing, but still with a distinct development.Well, this is the last album by TD I really liked. After this one, TD changed personnel and style and turned to commercially successful electronica.

Most bands that do live performances like to say where those live performances took place. Not Tangerine Dream on this actually quite good album. For some reason where these tracks were recorded is some kind of big secret which of course suggests the recordings were faked even if they were not. Funny thing though-I have heard recordings made of TD in Detroit & in Montreal during the bands 1977 North American tour and although they were interesting they fell short of the quality of the material on Encore. I suppose its all down to what the individual fan wants to believe. Peter Baumann returned with TD in 1981 with the soundtrack to the film Thief even though his place as a member of TD doing studio work had already been replaced by Johanns Shmoelling in 1980 on the TD studio project Tangram after PB did not participate in the 1978 TD studio project Cyclone & in the 1979 TD studio project Force Majeure, PB's solo releases were poor with the exception of his very good 1976 solo effort Transharmonicnights.

Peter Baumann isn't on Thief as far as I know. The Virgin "Definitive Edition" reissues credited Peter Baumann on Tangram, Thief and Exit; in fact all featured Johaness Schmoelling.

Encore is a curious album, containing several different elements of the group's sound. This is perhaps why it is a distinct fan favourite. Recorded throughout their American tour in early 1977, the record features four lengthy pieces. Unlike Ricochet, their previous live record, the improvisations on show here feature elements of recorded music. Sections from Ricochet, Stratosfear and the Sorcerer soundtrack pop up at various points during the album. These aren't simply performed as individual tracks, but woven in and out of the original side-long pieces.The music on Encore continues somewhat in the vein of Stratosfear, moving away from the amorphous, bubbling soundscapes of the band's previous material, towards a more progressive rock sound, with keyboard solos taking much of the focus away from the sequencer melodies, which are left to run somewhat repetitively in the background. The introduction of Oberheim's polyphonic synthesisers adds a new textural element to the group's music, which would be key to their future in the 1980s. The record also features the electronic rhythms first hinted at in Stratosfear, which are particularly prominent in the third track, Coldwater Canyon.The sound quality is an issue that often comes up in regards to this remastered edition, and in truth it does leave something to be desired in places. In removing the hiss from an initially hissy recording, much of the dynamic element of the music has gone (not to mention its top end - it's the muddiest sounding of the band's Virgin albums); although this is not entirely surprising - the number of errors on the sleeves and booklets of Virgin's "Definitive Edition" albums shows that attention to detail wasn't necessarily the label's interest at the time. Further more, the original recording features some distortion as the band played so loud at the time. As opposed to some of the band's other 'polished-in-the-studio' live albums (particularly Ricochet), Encore is more like a good quality fan recording. In some ways, this lends it a certain authenticity.That said, album closer Desert Dream is the anomaly here. Although not mentioned in the sleeves, the music in the piece dates back to much earlier in the band's catalogue - which is not surprising on hearing it. The most abstract and experimental piece released as part of the band's Virgin catalogue, Desert Dream is a strange way to end an album filled with energetic live performances, although it sees the band being as idiosyncratic as ever.As I started, Encore is a curious album. It's an essential component of where the band were at the moment. Although unintentional, its referencing of previous records almost seems like Peter Baumann himself giving the 'encore', before leaving shortly after the tour ended. Out of context of the band's catalogue, your milage may vary. Not being a fan of long solos, much of the album - Coldwater Canyon in particular - can be tiresome for me personally, and the album ranks as one of my least favourite '70s TD albums. For those who enjoy the improvisational side of electronic and/or progressive music, the solo-led music on Encore will be perfect.

I've recently purchased and listened to all of the TD albums from Zeit on up to this one and can say that this one is the best. It seems like TS are really at their best when they're playing live. Now, I've only heard two live albums, this one and Ricochet, but they seem to be on a different level than the studio recordings. Just listen to crowd when the sequenced line kicks in at 3:42 in the first track, Cherokee Lane. I'm pretty sure TD are better live, b/c there's a TD live recordings trading group called the Tangerine Tree that is devoted to this stuff. They may well be worth searching out.
