This unofficial release does not seem to have been made by Mecano. What is suspect on the back sleave of this CD is that Ton Lebbink is credited as the drummer and that there are obviously no real drums to be heard but a drum machine. The same can be said for guitars.In a French magazine of 1981 called Tago Mago (which includes 4 titles by Theo Bolten on a cassette), one can find a discography of the band in which "Shapeless Volume" is mentioned as a project of Dick Polak published by the Torso and Backstreet labels. Although it is not precised, one can suppose that it was released on vinyl.Then, according to the Mecano biography on the Nationaal Pop Instituut, "A Shapeless Volume" was recorded in June 1981 as a side-project of Dick Polak, together with Peter Graute and Martin van Leer, owners of Backstreet Records. This is coherent with the previous information.Furthermore, it has been said that this was a recording of Mecano's last studio session. Recordings of this kind being made on tapes, and no vinyl having been released after "Autoportrait", it is very few probable that what is on this CD would be this last session : one can sometimes hear the typical crackles of a vinyl.This would on the contrary stengthen the hypothesis that we have here a copy of Polac's side project with Graute and van Leer transfered on CD. Having never found a version of the original vinyl, this can so far only remain a supposition.Whenever somebody could bring more information, it would be thankfully welcomed.

A Shapeless Volume was a project of Peter Graute, Martin van Leer and me. Martin knobs, Peter guitars and casio's, me vocals, accordion and some drums. It delivered 4 tracks, Men of Soft Awareness, Beatrice, Pharmacist and Laterna Physica. It never appeared on vinyl, wasn't mixed even and just put on two cassettes. So one of my friends made it public; it was just home stuff. Also the other songs are not Mecano, but just Tejo Bolten, diving under in casio's.on the memorized Tago-Mago production. Dirk Polak.
