whatever person listed this as shoegaze is an idiot. its darkwave, IDM/alternative R&B, at best. i have to say, it sounds unlike anything else i have. after a while (disc lasts an hour), it begins to become tiring. not alot to keep you interested after about 45 minutes. that aside - i love the aesthetic of the record. the synths and dirty drum beats are a nice touch.

Slohmo is like Squarepusher at his most unsettling. Euphoric one minute and air-crushingly claustrophobic the next, the LA native – also known as 25-year-old Henry Laufer – crafts melodious yet unashamedly dark and dense slabs of abstract electro pitched somewhere between the outer edges of Boards of Canada and Flying Lotus. This isn’t surprising, perhaps, for a producer who describes his second offering as “devastating and violent,” a more abrasive – and altogether tighter – offering than his 2011 debut Bad Vibes. With remixes for the likes of Drake and The Weeknd under his belt, and having worked with the respected Banks and How To Dress Well on a number of limited releases, there’s a real sense within these 11 tracks that Dark Red could see Laufer make his mark as an artist in his own right.Eschewing IDM trends that veer towards computer-programmed production, Dark Red instead uses natural distortion, fuzz and analogue noise as its weapons of choice, due largely to Laufer unearthing a bunch of 80s recording gear in his father’s garage.Intentionally distressing sounds to echo the icy menace and emotional charge found on early black metal and rave tapes, Dark Red is a deeply transformative album that leaves no room for subtlety. Indeed, in every fractious riff and synthetic beat you feel that Laufer is crying out for an instant reaction through the carefully codified layers of unearthly sound. From doom-laden album opener Ten Days of Falling to the down-tempo atmospherics of Buried; the drum machine-driven Meet Ur Maker; tempo-changing album highlight Apathy, and bona fide floor-filler Relentless, Laufer has created something of a monster.
