Drax was one the prominent techno artists of the early 90ties, and along with Basic Channel, Axis Records, UR and so many other early, influential labels, forged a bold new direction for the Detroit techno imprint. Harder, darker, more minimal and distinctly acidic, Drax as a project was relentless. Thomas Heckmann would explore more cerebral Detroit tinged sounds in other ways on other albums, but this is straight up hard acid with some dark chords thrown in for good measure. It's uncompromising nature and commitment to minimalism is what makes it still endearing to me to this day, where so much other techno from this period just sounds horribly dated now. This album does not contain the two best known Drax songs (Amphetamine and Phosphene) although the latter appears in a different, albeit inferior version, but for the most part this is an incredibly consistent set, that goes with it's more "mellow" companion album Tales from the Mental Plane. anyone who was around to dance in clubs or raves in this early period will know the name Drax well, but for those of you who got turned onto things like Deepchord, and traced their roots back to Basic Channel and the likes, who have not heard of Drax, would do well to orientate themselves to this fine piece of techno history.
