I knew things weren't going to be great when the first thing I saw in the paper sleeve was a tendril of vinyl offcut. My record came dirty and scuffed, even with minor scratches. Judging by what looks like a drunk person has rammed it onto the spindle and the scratches in the first track, my copy appears to have been play tested. And even though they've warmed it up for me I had a hard time getting it back off the spindle because the hole is a little small.I had to turn the volume up significantly from the record I listened to before it to get a similar level. I would expect a record with sides as short as this to be louder. There is quite a lot of background noise. I can't be sure how much is vinyl noise and how much is simply noise from the recording and unfortunately I don't have an original to compare. But it's very distracting, almost unacceptable in quiet sections so I'm sure this disc is most of it. Overall the sound quality isn't too bad, but you just have to hope yours doesn't arrive all scuffed and scratched. Perhaps other copies are less noisy overall but I doubt it. The booklet is nice with a lot of info and photos, but at this price I expect much higher quality control on the record itself. And the jacket is rather flimsy and cheap. I would actually like a digital version of this master to cut out the unreliability of pressing plants, and a download card would have been nice at this price.For comparison, I bought a sealed 2000 pressing of Song of Experience at the same time as this, and it sounds far better than this version of Innocence, or at least my copy of it anyway. It was also just over half the price, and I was sure it was going to sound awful compared to this nice new expensive record, but it ended up being the other way around unfortunately.

From "eq'd" master tapes, what does that mean? master tapes are mastered originals, what does eq'd (equalized) have to do with it? and 'from the original master tapes', doesn't means AAA. It might sound great, no doubt, but unless it says 'All Analogue' these days, it I very much doubt it is.

There's a video on the Now Again website showing the lacquer being cut directly from the tape, with no digital gear in sight (see: http://www.rappcats.com/shop/song-of-innocence/). AAA is truly rare these days, no doubt, but this is a legitimate all-analog pressing.

Hardly anything is all analog these days. If you reissue something on vinyl, particularly if its from a major label, they send you a digital master to use. Analog mastering typically is more expensive because it requires more equipment and more time, and original master tapes may have broken down anyway, so it's better to be concerned about sound quality than signal chain technology.

I don't mind the paper sleeve. My copy had no scuffs or marks and the sound quality is great.Downsides to me are the non-capital label on the record. And the flimsy cover, which is oversized to accommodate the booklet. There is already some seam split from its journey in the mail due to this.So to summarise, the sound quality is top notch, the booklet is great however I would have traded it for a capital label and a stronger cover.

This mastering/pressing sounds fantastic; I can't imagine we'll ever get a better vinyl reissue of this classic album. The packaging could be better, but give the record a cleaning and a new inner and you'll be fine. Based on the notes on the album, it sounds like it was an AAA mastering (lacquers created directly from tape), which doesn't happen often these days. Highly recommended!

Extremely disappointed at this reissue. It's probably my fault for assuming. Given Egon's deep love and respect for Axelrod, I honestly thought that this reissue was going to be at the level of the first run of the Now-Again Reserve Series. In some aspects, it is. Maybe if the term "Audiophile reissue" wasn't used so loosely. I don't own many audiophile reissues, but I can tell you that the ones I do own are proper in every way. Thick, sturdy jackets. Poly inner sleeves. Thick vinyl (minimum 180g). This doesn't come close. I don't even want to go into how shitty this jacket is. If you do end up purchasing, I highly suggest cleaning the record before playing. The booklet is pretty amazing too. Just be extremely clear on knowing what it is you're buying so that there's no disappointment. I just sincerely feel like this deserved so much more.

Sold my Scorpio/180g Axelrod LPs in advance of this reissue series and I'm very happy with this pressing. Gave it a vacuum clean and a poly inner, it sounds perfect.

Picked this up in the UK on RSD and love it. I have a cd copy from years back and the sound of this press is a delight in comparison, loads of detail, nice and quiet with no major pops or crackles (those with noisy pressings obviously just had bad luck). The booklet and photos are excellent. Can't see what the problem is with the sleeve but then I haven't studied it closely. I was just excited to come across it by chance on the day, got it home, played it a couple of times, sounds fantastic. Go grab one if you can and don't worry about it, it's a good one.

I wish they had kept the original Capitol label instead that black label. Also would it be so hard to reissue an album with a thick old style cardboard barcode-less sleeve? While the sound's great, I think many collectors would love to have a closest-to original repress even from the packaging side.

Are you all kidding me now with the paper sleeve comments? Provide your own damn sleeve if you don't like the one it came with. Furthermore, spend $200 to $400 on an original if you are that much of an "audiophile". This pressing sounds fine in my opinion, and I appreciate Now Again giving you more than just a record and actually giving you a booklet with more background on the artist than you might have know. Don't be talked out of buying this. Well worth my $27. Jeez people!

I have to agree with the quibbles about the sleeve. They went with a wide spine so that it could hold the LP + the booklet, but they went too thin on the paper stock so it is super flimsy at that spine width. I would have been willing to spend an extra couple bucks for a tip-on like the Baby Huey reissue got. Record sounds solid.

This was the one RSD release I was really looking forward to purchasing. The good... magnificent job on the remastering, cannot fault it. Sonically a 9/10. The bad... poor pressing, sounded better after a clean which has gotten rid of most of the surface noise but the record itself was very dirty. Paper inner sleeve doesn’t help at all. The ‘ok’...album artwork has been recreated well, looks sharp but the cardboard stock used is very flimsy and will crease over time trying to hold the weight of the vinyl and booklet. Speaking of, the booklet is a fascinating read and includes pics I’ve never seen before but it doesn’t focus on just this one release, so I’m guessing it will be used for all the upcoming releases. The jury is out if I will purchase the remainder of the reissues.

Mine does have marks and very occasional surface noise. By no means a deal breaker though - it sounds ace and I enjoyed my first listen.

That's too bad. The hype sticker reads like it's on point and then the pedigree flies off a cliff when it comes time to mention where the record is pressed. Roll the dice: Optimal/GZ/Pallas/Rainbo/Quality/Out Behind Someone's Garage... I guess that's why they call it a hype sticker. Sounds like the reemergence of another great title has been boogered by cutting corner$. I was hoping this would be a winner; if anyone can post _good_ experiences about this sonics of this reissue please do.

This is exactly why I passed on this release, had similar experience with this labels reissues. Luckily I could see the shitty paper sleeve through the poly bag and knew not to shell out $30 for this because the vinyl would be all marked up.
