for all of the abstract weirdness that jumps out on adrian belew's resume - be it as frank zappa's stunt guitarist, robert fripp's younger hands, david bowie's guitar hero, david byrne's songwriter or trent reznor's secret weapon - the fact is that the man always wanted to be a fucking pop star. he may be the biggest beatles fan that the southeastern united states ever produced.this record floats between belew's massive revolver/sgt. pepper's era beatles fetish and the influence built up from the david bowie and talking heads records he helped write in the late 70's and early 80's. but, if you follow adrian belew then you are probably a guitar player, or at the least a large fan of the instrument, and so your question is "what does belew do with his guitars on this record?".and, see, i initially found the record hugely disappointing because the answer is "not much". it's a pop record, after all. excluding track 4, the guitar style presented on this record is a direct rip on george harrison's. adrian belew is consciously - and obviously - ripping on harrison for the whole record, which has an interesting result given that....he also does a good mccartney impression. intrigued? now consider this: adrian belew is 10 times the guitarist that george harrison was. so, although he is ripping on his general style here, any guitar geek will immediately hear a significant technical improvement......and that's where i stop with that comparison, but remember this: i would never claim that technically better means better.you'll also hear a large eno influence, and a significant bowie influence; but a lot of the perceived bowie influence is from records that were written by adrian belew....now, i previously singled out track four. it's quite a bit different than the rest of the record. yes, it has a bit of a beatles feel, but the twist on it is that it would be the lone representative of lennon's sound on here; the rest of the record explores mccartney's writing and vocals and harrison's backwards/eastern guitar styles. many have claimed that this very, very beautiful, reverb drenched harped-out guitar track is belew's finest composition. certainly, it's one of his best pieces.in conclusion.....if you're a huge crimson fan looking for twisted time signatures and messy, noisy guitar atmospherics then you may find this extremely disappointing. but if you're also a big beatles or bowie fan then this record may carve out a bit of a soft spot....
