No girl group was quite like Shadow Morton's Shangri-las, who bucked the trend of sweet and cute girl groups and came across as sexy biker chicks. Shadow Morton's penchant for doom and gloom was hip before its time. "Leader of the Pack" is of course a classic teenage death song, but it pales before "Remember (Walking In The Sand)" and the magnificent "Past, Present And Future", both performances becoming much more than mere 'pop music'. Never has tragedy sounded so good! Their reign ended all too quick, but these girls turned out some great singles in just a few years. This collection is pretty good...would have liked to have seen "Dressed In Black" and "He Cried" (the female take on "She Cried" by Jay and the Americans) included. Somehow Mary Weiss seems so very wicked on that number! Also, I was not surprised to see the Jerry Leiber writing credit on "Past, Present and Future". He would further display some poignant and cynical writing skills on Peggy Lee's great "Is That All There Is?"
