Review : Canadian band Goody Two Shoes, "Come Together" on the Paragon label from November 1969. Goody Two Shoes were really Jay Telfer and Fergus Hambleton, both ex-A Passing Fancy, whose sole album on the Canadian Boo label is worth big bucks. This one's worth less, primarily because this is less garage fuzz psych and more rural late 60's rock, like the Band, whose "Up on Cripple Creek" they cover here. It's nearly as hard to find though, and the pop rock sound they adopt here is still awfully pleasant stuff. Another member of note appears possibly on his first recording, Kevan Staples of Rough Trade fame strums a guitar. Is it him spitting the fuzz on 'Losing'? He shows up on Jay Telfer's solo album a few years after this strumming acoustic guitar. Harry Nilsson gets covered twice - the first, a faithful cover of "Without You" that even gets Harry's playful scat singing just right, and the second, a real downer version of "One" with sad oboe and minimal band accompaniment. Kudos for the band for using Harry's version as a reference rather than the oddly upbeat but more familiar Three Dog Night version. Elsewhere, "Slow Down" gets all dirty and funky, with thrashing drums and growling sax, while the duo dust off the old fuzz guitar (the one you remember from A Passing Fancy) for "I'm Losing Tonight", a biting slice of West Coast Country Joe and the Fish dirty acid psych. Incidentally, their featured cover of the Beatles "Come Together" is pretty straightforward, amazingly so actually, but it's a familiar and comfortable sound, much like the bulk of this laid-back album. Or like the old pair of sneakers on the cover. Original 1969 pressing on the Canadian Paragon label.
