Bill Direen is a legendary cult figure, NZ's very own Lou Reed of sorts, churning out tons of difficult, personal songs, coloured with a punk sensibility and wry sense of humor.This is The Builders first EP for the then brand new Flying Nun label and it still sounds astounding 30 years later, witness the first track, “Girl at Night” with its cyclical slow build up to the rockin’ finale, or then there’s the minor masterpiece, “I Thought I Knew You” which saunters its way through a dark alleyway of churning organ, spluttering drums and scorching lead guitars.On the flip is the wonderful burlesque of “Starry Day” with a manic vocal from Bill, underscored by that trademark rinky-dink organ which nearly takes off. Then we’re into the mighty “Russian Rug”; what this is about is anyone’s guess, but it keeps you hanging on with some serious drum & bass and a skronkin’ guitar that sounds like it was recorded in the toilet!
