One of the most confrontational albums I've ever listened to. Truly one of a kind. Easily one of my favourite albums, in my opinion it's untouchable, at times suffocating, at times hilarious. By track 2, Clara, with those swelling strings that seem to give you vertigo, you know you are in for a dramatic ride! Just thinking about this album gives me goosebumps.Truly devastating, beautiful, unique, hilarious, terrifying music that you'll either love or hate, personally love it. Let’s all hope for at least one more Scott Walker album.

dpfrag - You are absolutely correct about those goosebumps! This is definitely an album that will be inspiring other artists for many years to come. Thank goodness Scott Walker is able to map out this alien territory for others to pave and turn into musical suburbs, though it will probably take decades for that to happen. One would need to be fearless to engage in this sort of art, and there's relatively few with the capability to travel this path.

Welp, if there hasn't been an album that has made you shit yourself before, this album will at least help you do it. It's one hell of a morose offering from Scott Walker and, I gotta say, it actually did make me have trouble sleeping for at least three nights. I actually don't know why, either. I mean, a lot of dark ambient and all that sort of shit doesn't really, really creep me out, but for some reason The Drift just fucked me right up for a while. Some would even argue that this is more intense than any metal album ever. I would definitely agree. I feel that this album makes Sunn O)))'s Black One feel like a release by someone like Phoenix or some other upbeat indie rock band. Seriously, this is just one ominous and fucked up musical experiment. Arguably, it's a masterpiece straight from the depths of hell. I mean, on the first listen I was just listening to Scott Walker's vocals. I wasn't paying attention to what he was talking about, and I was like "The fuck? This is like a creepy version of Richard Cheese". That sentiment quickly turned around when I listened the second time and found out the meaning behind some of the songs. The song Clara is about the mistress who was with Mussolini at the time of his execution (which also meant a grim fate for her, too). The lyrics of the song conjure a picture of what was going through the mind of Clara the night before her death. The instrumentation is eerie as all fuck, and after the intro, you'll be hit by gut wrenching strings that just churn to the pounding of drums that act and sound like a rhythmic metronome, and the sound of someone punching a slab of meat. The punching representing the bodies of Clara and Mussolinis' hung bodies getting assaulted by the public with stones. In the latter stage of the song there's also an off key trumpet that blares while Scott Walker wails with a voice of pure insanity. The two combine and just really creep the living shit out of you. Another song, Jesse, is apparently an imagined scenario about Elvis having a conversation with his stillborn brother (named Jesse, nurrrrgh) about the events of September 11. Shit is so fuckin' metal. As soon as I found this out, I was just like "Man, fuck, this is so krieg". Also, it kinda made me continuously look behind me, as if someone were going to sneak up on me and just shout "SUP NIGGA?!". It's also interesting to note that the guitar for Jesse is a downtuned version of the intro for Jailhouse Rock by the so-called King of Rock. Either way, the chorus is creepy as all fuck, and when it hits you, you'll shit bricks for sure. The end of the song finishes on an extremely bleak note, with Scott Walker going a capella (like a gangsta), singing "I'm alive... I'm the only one left alive". At this point you might be thinking "Hey, thanks, Scotty. Totally not sleeping tonight, you old cunt". I wouldn't blame you at all. Clara and Jesse are the two stand out performances and the other songs don't really have the same impact on you like the two aforementioned tracks. That's not to say that they're not all creepy as fuck, though. The dissonant instrumental passages and fucked up lyrical content is still there, as is Scott Walker's darkened sense of humour. It's not an album that you'll be able to know the meaning of in one listen, but multiple listens should lead the listener to experience intensified moments of paranoia, isolation and discomfort. Now that to me is excellence in art. There's so much more that could be said about this album, but I need to take a piss and I think I'm ready to go take a nap. I think the best way to experience this album is through headphones home alone during the night. It's a great way to send shivers up your spine.
