In 2003, the electroclash train that had hit the Western dancefloors in the late 1990s was slowly but surely running out of steam. Several artists made a late appearance on the scene, including Ra-X, with this release. After all, he was on the Bunker roster, as was i-f, whose Space Invaders Are Smoking Grass pretty much singlehandedly started the whole genre. Leben Und Tod came too late (and on too confidential a label) to have the same impact, yet it was and remains a class act.Die Wahrheit is the jolly tune of the lot, as close to Space Invaders... as it will get here. It has a catchy hook, creaky sounds and insightful (!) lyrics delivered vocoded-Schlager-style ('Dein Gefühl ist die Wahrheit').The other tracks oscillate between nostalgia (close to depression, at times), claustrophobia and hallucination, packed with background melodies in minor tones, hallucinatory, high-pitched stabs, soothing and distorted basslines over ballsy TR-808 electro beats -- it is Ra-X, after all. Der Tod Ist Hier is particularly grating in its use of all-out, burbling electroclash patterns, whilst Smack City Sewer Anthem thrills with an epic atmosphere that seems to put into music what one would experience, sitting in a rocket during lift-off. The pick of the lot might be the more subtly programmed Viper, a heart-wrenchingly nostalgic trip, in which the drums are augmented by hallucinogenic frequencies and a soothing bassline. Ace.
