Very different track list from the 2003 version of this title.

You bought the right version, ie. the 2016 one. It retains most of the best tracks and gets rid of the tedious ones (the overrated "Lesson No.1 (For Electric Guitar)", the tedious "Beat Bop", the duff DNA track …). It also adds Alan Vega and ImpLOG. The only major loss on the 2016 version is the cute "Button Up" by The Bloods.

Which one ends up being the better comp though? I'd like to check one out, but not sure which to go with.

This has a different tracklist compared to the original pressing: https://soundsoftheuniverse.com/sjr/product/new-york-noise-2015-dance-music-from-the-new-york-underground-1977-1982

There is nothing disappointing about this compilation. Sure, an artist may have been left out or tracks overlooked. However what is on the compilation is pure listening pleasure.

Another slightly confused post-punk/dance compilation from Soul Jazz: if you're supposed to be highlighting NY's early eighties avant-garde club culture, why haven't you included August Darnell's excellent remix of "Contort Yourself" rather than the (admittedly also great) rockier Contortions version? And it may be an obvious tune to drop, but Dinosaur L's "Go Bang" is infinitely preferable to the cheesy "Clean On Your Bean" included here (and if you had to include a lesser known Arthur Russell tune on the album, why not "Wax The Van"?). Disappointing.
