heart of sky
Morbid visions of the past - 85% (Taken from Metal Archives, originally written by Slynt). This is some badass death thrash, and one of the better demos I've heard this side of the nineties. There's absolutely nothing here you haven't heard before, but it's performed with the right amount of attitude, with a production that both captures the filth of morbid metal yet manages to give each instrument its place; everything is clearly audible but it is not polished. The somewhat warm tone takes away some rawness, perhaps, but the vocals are appropriately grimy and the riffs are all taken from the brackish pool of eighties' thrash and death metal.Excluding the one-and-a-half minute instrumental introduction ("Into the Darkest of Realms"), we have four necromaniacal songs to digest, three hovering around the four-minute mark and "Armies of Concrete Rot" at five minutes. The music is mainly reliant on the guitar riffs which drive the songs forward. The riffs are mostly of the dirty thrash metal variety, like old Celtic Frost on amphetamine in "Underneath the Crucifix" (note the uh!), like early Kreator, like mid-era Slayer. The sound of early Sepultura and Sarcófago is also inevitably part of this demo. Sometimes the vocals veer close to Max Cavalera's vocals on Schizophrenia, but for most of the duration the vocalist relies on deep growls, more spoken than sung. The vocals are a little low in the mix, but this adds to the charm rather than detracts. Even though Necromaniac isn't nowhere near as progressive as Revenant was, Morbid Metal reminds me a lot of Revenant's classic Prophecies of a Dying World. If you like that album, you'll like this demo; Necromaniac sound more sinister, though, and the cover art and lyrical content leans toward black metal. The music, however, is pure death thrash, simplistic but oh so effective at getting that head banging. Yeah, it's another release looking back at the metal underground of the mid- to late eighties, but their references are brilliant and from beginning to end Necromaniac's demo keeps my attention despite the lack of originality. If they develop this strong beginning toward a more unique signature (without losing sight of just how fucking great their mix of thrash and death is), I'm sure this band can only become more popular. You can listen to (and buy) the whole demo on Bandcamp
