Bahamas FUNK gem!!Jay Mitchell - "Deep Heat" on Grand Bahama RecordsThree musicians, four songs, and a hell of a lot of soul - this is one of the holy grails of Bahamian flavored funk. I previously reviewed Jay Mitchell's LPs "Spirits of Fire Goom Rock" and "Your Mama and Your Daddy Again", which mix Bahamian rhythms and American funk and soul, but this EP "souvenir of the Bahamas" featuring 4 extended tracks sticks strictly to the James Brown side of things. A small combo, with Mitchell on organ and vocals backed by just a bassist and drummer, they manage to carry the weight of a much larger band and serve up some serious heat. It's a pretty raw affair with brilliant energy, and comes off as if recorded live in the studio. All the songs are covers, opening with Alive and Kicking's one-hit-wonder "Tighter and Tighter", then taking Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" from ballad to funk jam over 12+ minutes, "Let It Be" gets a similar churchy and sanctified stretching out that would make the Beatles proud, before the album closes with a monster version of the Wilson Pickett smash "Mustang Sally". Two of these appear on the Numero Group's fantastic "Cult Cargo: Grand Bahama Goombay" compilation, and the label also released a 12" of "Mustang Sally" that features a couple remixes. This one is of particular interest to beat diggers and producers for several uncluttered and super heavy breakbeats. Fans of funk and soul in general will find a lot here to get excited about, whether it's Mitchell's powerful soul shouting, his tasteful gospel organ chops, or the tighter than gnat-booty rhythm section that sound as if they were born playing together. Outside of his near impossible to find LP "Impartiality", this is a high point of Mitchell's discography and well deserving of its cult status. Heavy.
