After years of pleasantly enjoying the beautiful sparse melodic drenched 2 albums Ross made with Rodby I finally came across a copy of Ross's debut on some blogsite. I have to say it was a shock to hear Traut's playing here having a more Larry Carlton-esque feel you know white man funky with a few jazz licks thrown in for good measure(not that its bad!). The music is what one would expect from 1981 when jazz was shedding its traditional 50-60's era be bop sound and kicking aggressive complex fusion to the curb for a sweeter more downplayed less aggressive song style. The music is easily digestible and dare I say a perfect match for an evening in the backyard drinking some nice wine BUT doesnt come near that magic beauty he seemed to capture in unison with Rodby on the Duo Life or perhaps those 2 releases where an experiment to see what a stripped down sound would garner from the public.....You DO get Trout Stream which is perhaps the one redeeming song and the closest he gets to the "James" Metheny composition style in a group setting. He stripped the tune down in one the albums with Rodby which still sounds beautiful openness and melodic earworm I dont mind hearing when I wake up in the morning.
