According to Len Faki, his new imprint Figure SPC is an attempt to capture the timeless qualities of music. These are "Sounds that last forever. Not necessarily only for the dance floor, but for the heart and soul," as he recently told Resident Advisor.While this statement must still pass the test of posterity, if this release is anything to go by, Faki, and more importantly, Jeroen Search, are off to a great start. If you love any of the great dub techno from the past, like Maurizio and Basic Channel, or some of the wonderful music coming out in the present such as the releases on Styrax, Ann Aimee, Echocord, etc., then you will enjoy this tremendously.I am not sure why Faki didn't release this first, as I find it to be the much stronger offering of the two SPC As, but perhaps A 3 will top even this? The tracks are arranged from the most minimal to the deepest. The first is a rather simple yet incredibly appealing number that just chugs along in perfect harmony. This track will remind most of the aforementioned mid-90s sounds, but it is certainly no rehash with totally fresh components. Well, if harmony is the word then the second track does even better. This dreamscape, while arranged with a similar structure as the first, definitely contains a greater sonic range. For me this is a beautiful song and probably my favourite track on the release, however difficult it may be to choose from these three. Out of the three the third track is the one most akin to the Styrax sound. Very deep, lots of soaring highs, and a great underlying bass line.Make no mistake, this is a fantastic release.
