A Sucked Orange is basically a much more fleshed out version of the earlier cassette-only release, Scrag! Seeking a home for a collection of odds-and-ends on tape so cut up it had become unusable, Steven Stapleton chanced upon an offer to release an album on CD, by the people who would eventually form World Serpent and distribute NWW throughout the 1990s.The album sounds pretty much like you'd imagine a Nurse With Wound offcuts album to sound like: snippets of weird noises, absurd samples, abstract sounds, jarring contrasts, spoken word sections. Two thirds of the tracks run for less than two minutes, with only the four minute tribal sounding 'I'm a Frayed Knot' coming close to sounding like an actual song. Stapleton's humour is in full play here, the album being probably his funniest alongside Sylvie & Babs: 'A Precise History of Industrial Music' is a daft but enjoyable satire, 'Raymonde Fluffs It' a self-explanatory five second outtake, whie 'Pleasant Banjo With Irritating Squeak' does what it says on the tin. Elsewhere, titles include 'Scrambled Egg Rebellion in the Smegma Department' and, for a Current 93 outtake, 'Dogs Breath Rising'. Many of the tracks will be familiar to listeners who've explored earlier Nurse albums, with elements and extracts appearing in their raw form: aspects of Spiral Insana, Sylvie & Babs, Lumb's Sister and Gyllenskold all appear in unheard forms. For every oddity, however, there is a really striking moment: the aforementioned 'I'm a Frayed Knot' is a wonderful Eastern-tinged percussive number, while 'Crack Up', although short, is one of Stapleton's finest drone works. The vocal pieces sung by Sinan and Ritva are lovely in their own right.In some ways, A Sucked Orange feels like a Nurse With Wound album cut into its constituent parts: if all these pieces were collaged together, rather than placed one after another, one could imagine a coherent album coming together. That, however, is not the point of the album. Instead, we are given an overload of information that is disjointed, but enjoyable because of it. It might not be classic NWW, but it's absurdly fun nevertheless.
