Solvent joins the Ghostly International crew with APPLES & SYNTHESIZERS, continuing his gentle electro takeover of the world. The percussive bursts of "Operating Ease" contrast the bouncy melody, while the more traditional bass that opens "My Radio" gives way to a summery vibe, vocoder and all. "Poly Ensemble" is more squat and thicker, though it has its own graceful drive, but "Think Like Us" gets more sinister and robotic. Luckily "Remote Control" hops into synth-pop for a 80s blast of fun, and "For You" adds a touch of romance. "Science with Synthesizers" leans more towards spare digitalism, and "Steve Strange" closes the album out with an angular funk. An intriguing album.

"Apples and Synthesizers" was one of my greatest disappointments in 2004, due to the unfortunate addition of weak, grating processed vocals and frequently sub-par lyrics, a dearth of new material, and fewer of the sweet melodies of previous releases. The exceptions are "My Radio" (fine vocals, good lyrics and stunning music) and "For You," both of which have been released already in two different versions apiece (not counting remixes). I'm glad the album was well received, but for me the extraordinary quality of earlier releases is not matched on "Apples and Synthesizers."

One of my top picks for 2004. I don't understand why it's only half new material, but when it's this good it's hard to complain. All the songs on this album are classic electro/synth pop with shades of experimental tendencies. It makes for more proof of Solvent's excellent talent to mix heartfelt melodies with head nodding rythmic structures. This album shows Solvent moving one more step away from bedroom experimentation and toward the path of mature songwriting, which seems to be an excellant road for him to take.
