Recently I heard that Berlin based band Alice in the Cities will be starting the recordings for their debut album early next year and we also heard they will be playing at a well known festival in East-Flanders in May, along with one of our other favourite new discoveries, Cecilia::Eyes. The first time I saw Alice in the Cities was at Incubate but unfortunately their debut CDR's were sold out by the time I got to the merch table. Yep, they're that good. The second time, in Kievitsnest (Antwerp) I finally had the opportunity to get my hands of one of those disks. The e.p. constists of five tracks, each named after a city. Most of them, except 'Moscow', are beautiful stripped down post-rock songs, sounding clean and joyful. 'Moscow' is a surf-rock track that somehow surprises the listener. It sounds very happy but a little out of place between the others. The sound itself is not perfect, probably because it was recorded live in the rehearsing room, but the hint of distance in the sound makes the whole a pretty interesting voyage. The most striking observation is maybe the fact that anyone with a little experience in playing an instrument can make this music. It doesn't sound very difficult to play. Yet, the chemistry between the band members makes it sound so natural and blissful that you have to feel good and a smile has to appear on your face. Alice in the Cities is all about enjoyment and he natural flow of music and doesn't need a overproduced product to show it. Furthermore there's the Ennio Morricone-like cinematic feel to the music, as if it were made to be on a Western soundtrack. To conclude I can only recommend going over to their bandcamp and download this beautiful e.p. I'm sure it will brighten your day or at least make you feel a little happier. In this household it works every single time and we're all looking forward to getting our hands on the debut album that should emerge in the near future.www.merchantsofair.com
