THE TIJUANA REMIXES shows off a more mellow side of Panoptica, aided, in no small part, by his compatriots in the Nortec Collective. But the new track, "Ocaso," brings a smoothness to his sound that contrasts the harder bits on 01*02*03*04, and his own mix of “Pluma” reinforces this more soothing side. Clorofila’s take on “Pluma,” however, has a spritely melody, though it doesn’t develop much beyond that. Hiperboreal’s mix of “Tecnica Manana,” on the other hand, owes much more to German tech-dub than what’s commonly perceived as Mexican. “Torero T.,” as reinterpreted by Fussible takes a much speedier beat than his counterparts. Finally, the other new track, “She’s in Fiestas” has a hint of Latin percussion and melodies, but with a glitchy tech-house that’s more Akufen than Latin house. Surprising, and no less Mexican for it.
