Sometimes i find new music in rather odd directions. Almost on daily visited website,, i found an interesting submission which was entitled as "...So I accidentally spent 5 years on something..." where the main man and composer of RIBS, Keith Freund, described how he had spent five long years for making this release into reality and in addition he mentioned some reference points to few other well known orchestras such as the Muse, Queens Of The Stone Ages, Nine Inch Nails, Deftones and Smashing Pumpkins. Like many other site users, including myself of course, I followed the provided link which lead me to bands website and newly served digital EP which was on sale for five dollars. With offered clips, eventually the music managed to convince so much that i bought the release without hesitation and finally i needed to write something about this release. So... RIBS is a four-piece band from Boston that plays dark, alternative-rock and personally I could not really care about those previously mentioned bands. If someone really wants to dig the influence of the mentioned bands, go ahead... but in reality RIBS shows quite clearly with this EP that they have really tightly knotted package and have enough merits to create their own sound. British Brains is also the first part of the three EP series and it contains some kind of concept, or at least through titles but let comrade Stalin explain this: "But at Tehran, Stalin disapproved of Roosevelt's unconditional surrender position. He was not impressed with such superfluity; it would only prolong the war, and Russia had suffered in actuality more than the other nations. He remarked, "This war is being fought with British brains, American brawn, and Russian blood.""Minimalist keyboards and wiggling drums creates progressively advancing harmony in EP's first track "Even" by building up subduing calm and tingling, stunning atmosphere until the main essence of electric guitar starts drawing the true lines for this EP. It's called straight up, jagged and emotionally flicking rock. "Brains Out" focus the EP under a bright light. Vibrating and passionately proceeding mainriff makes your ears flapping and doubled-fed shotgun drumming makes this one very roaring experience and particularly the strong finish at the end creates this little by little soul tearing feeling when the elegiac vocals begins to repeat the words "I'm not ready to wake up". After two tracks you start to notice that the machine behind rhythm, especally the drummer, brings this intense, raw energy which also shows that he can also be technically capable which makes all the other pieces fall places naturally. With music flowing so well it doesn't feel like band is trying to force the four elements together. On the contrary. You can clearly hear how the tracks has been polished to the last rough corner and instruments are played with passion. Third track on the EP, "Silencer", is taking it times. Dazzling slow guitar creates this captivating bubble at the middle of the EP. Floating bass start echoing at two-minute marker and in the final minute the song is finally released to full intensity which emphasize the crushing atmosphere. "Transversal" turns to constant running movements where it wraps itself between swirling and overlaying riffing. EP finalize with "Queen Of Hearts" which brings its own kind of aggravating, as a far-reaching rumbles of incoming shock-waves incorporated with slowly hammering atmosphere. Almost industrial-like pattern, but not really. Overall, British Brains is very successful opening from these guys. EP presents different moods and the band manage to create peculiar but recognizable sound for themself. Hopefully, it doesn't take five years to make next chapter in this trilogy because it goes without saying that you need to strike while the iron is hot.
