This was Kirk's debut album and after listening to it so many times, I've asked myself "why does it work"? The music and arrangements are fresh but not mind-blowing; while the singing is powerful and energetic, yet not totally polished. The songwriting... it has to be the songwriting. The songs on this album are totally relevant to the Christian experience. Kirk, as we all know now, has been blessed with a tremendous gift for writing songs and this is why this debut album, which pales in comparison refinement-wise to recent projects, was such a huge success. Kirk "tells" us the story through the lyrics. The background vocals and music serve as the canvas on which he writes the words of his heart. For years, he's been one of the best at this art form. Sure, Kirk's music has evolved over the years and we expected that from him, but he has not disappointed us in his songwriting. His debut album is simply "simple". Fresh, original, pace-setting, trendy, but still simple and the rest, as they say, is history.
