AWESOME RECORD: beautifully aimed at the narrowmindness of punk rock record collectors, retromania-purists, unfolding & nourishing itself on the hate of the haters. makes me really forget that rollins ever was part of the band. in a good way, of course. +++ really great sound / production !

By far the best black flag album....Greg Ginn still genius after all these yars

prison-shank: u just have to love to hate you conservative & reactionary i-know-it-all-about-the purity-of-punk-rokk dudes... and don't forget: Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes ... always :-)))))

A fine way to destroy a legacy by exploiting a legendary band name for hype and some money. Flag dissolved in '86 and Ginn should have kept it that way. He should have released this album under his own name or something else. I wonder if anyone who worked on the album, aside from Ginn, has been paid yet?

Despite being almost universally panned by critics and fans alike, "What The..." ain't half bad. No, this album does not represent a return to form for Black Flag, but it has its moments. Two of the tracks, 'Blood and Ashes' and 'Off My Shoulders', are bonafide classics...and, while a few stinkers lurk amongst the remaining twenty, the record as a whole is listenable if unremarkable. The question on most people's minds will be whether this incarnation of the band (Greg Ginn on both guitar and bass; Ron Reyes on vocals; Gregory Amoore on drums) sounds more like "First Four Years"-era Black Flag or the later sub-metal version, and the answer is: neither, exactly. Despite the presence of Reyes, "What The..." bears little resemblance to classic Flag EPs like "Jealous Again", yet it's not as dark and sludgy as the mid-'80s stuff. The best way to describe this album is to say that Ginn's style of composing and playing has evolved, but the searing, distressed licks that are his trademark do evoke the vintage Black Flag sound on songs like 'Lies' and the aforementioned 'Blood and Ashes'. Amoore's drumming is crisp; he breaks into a jarring, off-kilter gallop on a handful of tracks, but sticks to a standard punk tempo for the most part. Reyes was never my favorite Flag vocalist, but--remarkably, and to his credit--he sounds almost exactly the same as he did in 1980. He's a fine lyricist, too.

"What The..." was my initial response to this heap, so at least they warn you on the cover. What a terrible album. By far the worst thing "Black Flag" has ever made. "What The..." features the worst cover art of all time. Greg Ginn is the only notable member still in the band for this release, and he has gotten really really lame. Black Flag is one of the greatest punk bands of all time and this album should be erased from their discography. Do yourself a favor, go see FLAG, and forget this album came out.

The art work is the best of the record..

This is the Greg Ginn's re-formed Black Flag with Ron Reyes on vocals.

I saw this formation of Black Flag in 2013 in Seattle. The album might not be great and the art might kind of suck, but man, they put on a much better live show than I expected. Sure, it's not rollins, but they still rocked the place. One of the best live punk shows I've been to. Part of that may have been due to the capacity of the small venue. Really brought back the rowdy and brothery punk fun from the 80's
