Out of San Francisco, with the lessons he learned in a city know for its legendary literature and music, came Chuck Prophet. Chuck has ridden the wave that carried so many of his kind so far before. He began his career as a session man, learning the ropes and developing his style and skills, while playing for and with some of the very best ... yet most who have managed to stay just under the radar, such as Jonathan Richman, Dan Penn, Kelly Willis, Robert [Bob] Neuwirth, and Warren Zevon, along with many others. There is something to be said for floating just below the radar, it somehow lends credibility and gives integrity to the artist ... it allows their music to remain in the hands of people willing to take the time and make the effort to discover their craft, yet all of that would be wasted if there were not a genuine talent behind the music. And I’m more then happy to say, that with Chuck Prophet, there is ... much more.Chuck blends and mixes rock and roll with the blues, country and some fine funk [like I haven’t heard since WAR came out with “Spill The Wine”] in a perfunctory manner that is all his own. He has a nice smooth deep voice with just enough gravel around the edges to hold your attention and make you say, “Woo!” His songs are relaxed and come very much from the front of his mind ... he reels them off as if he’s making it all up as he goes along. Chuck’s guitar playing is equally as smooth with tiny little atmospheric sparkles that are all his own ... yes, every once in awhile someone comes along who does change the textural landscape of music. Yet having said all of this, his music rests on your ears as if it has always been there, something that you recognize as being a sound that you were just never able to put your finger on until you heard Chuck Prohpet ... then with a smile, that old familiar feeling of Deja Vu washes over you.The music of Chuck Prophet is both haunting and beautiful, it will come at you from every direction, but will never overwhelm you in the least.Review by Jenell Kesler
