Phobism
When I was really into trance, I used to buy an artist album based on that one big tune I adored by that artist. I'd buzz about the album and write it a glorious review on Amazon, but when I picked it up again a few years down the line I'd listen and think 'actually, this isn't really very good'. More often than not, that stand-out tune was still fantastic but I'd realise the rest was just there for the sake of it.This one's different though. I loved 'Everyday' and went on to get this album, and I still think it's great. Just hearing that epic intro of 'Singing For The Future' gives me shivers. It's a true album and 'Everyday' sits nicely on it. And if you like big trance hits, 'Embrace' rivals the former very closely. The whole collection has that quite 'clean' sound to it that most trance has never really had, even up to now, but that Agnelli & Nelson really pulled off.One of the things I like best about this album is that all the tracks are there in their entirety, they're not chopped to bits, and yet they all gel nicely together. Some of the natural, pure effects really take it to a new level. The running water, for example, in 'Embrace' is subtle but it makes an absolute spectacle out of something which otherwise would've just been a decent trance banger. There's similar value to the breakdown in 'Hudson Street' which is another brilliant record. But there's more to this than just anthems. The last two tracks show a more adventurous side to Agnelli & Nelson. 'Santiago' offers a twilight calmness despite its more d'n'b-style groove, and 'Sidewalk Driller' is a wonderfully produced, slightly dark and earthy breakbeat effort that Hybrid would be proud of.Even the more simple tracks have their place at the beginning. 'Let Love Come' is a very easy-on-the-ears vocal track but there's nothing at all obnoxious about it.The omission of the dated 'El Nino' shows just how far these lads had come only two years on. Give it a go - you certainly won't hear anything close to it from them now.
