Zavevidi
Toytown Records have released 4 (that I've been able to find) 'Mr. Toytown presents...' compilations, and I belive that this one is the best. The series is focused on bubblegum pop of the late 60s, early 70s-era. The titles that they offer I've not seen comp'd elsewhere, and I commend them on digging do deeply for fresh content. Generally, sound quality is acceptable, but only just. Highlights include: Christophe's 'Da Da Song part 1': Christophe was a French pop-star in those days, but this dark, psychedelic track is an interesting departure from his typical romance/ballad fare. Ginger Ale's 'Sugar Suzy': Great lead guitar breaks on this romantic ballad. A very good arrangement both instrumentally and vocally. Jumbo's 'I'm Leaving Today': Yes, this is the same Jumbo of Italian prog-rock fame. This track was an early pop-rock attempt by the group before they switched to prog-rock. Beautiful acoustic rhythm and lead guitar work can be found here, together with great vocals, both the lead and the background harmonies. Tucky Buzzard's 'You're All Alone': This track is an edited version of the track offered on TB's 1972 'Coming On Again' LP. I like the edited version much better as it comes without the rather uninspired hard-rock bridges that TB originally included. This track is the best of this collection, and a soft-rock masterpiece in my view. Overall, this compilation is a very strong, and is, I believe, essential for bubblegum enthusiast. Again, the sound quality may be an issue for some.
