Kirimath
Don Burrows may be the hardest working man in the Australian Jazz scene, and he certainly was back in 1976. His name a appeared on many jazz records during the 60s, 70s and 80s, and he recorded solo albums, soundtracks and exclusive sessions for the ABC that were never released for public sale. But for crate diggers, this is probably his best known piece of work. But the music on here is also very typically Australian sounding jazz. Most of it is very light and breezy with only hint of funk, if any. Numbers like ‘Remember When’ composed by George Golla and ‘Judo’ by Julian Lee probably sum up the genre better than I ever could. There’s even a little free jazz at the end with the appropriately named ‘Twilight Zone’, a composition of Frank Gibson Jnr. But like a lot of Australian records, there’s also that one cut that seems to defy the odds by bringing the funk. The title cut (The Tasman Connection) of this record starts with this heavy electric clarinet that sets the tempo for the drums to kick in after a few brief lines. The track slips effortlessly between a jazzier flute-led mode and the funky intro of Burrows’ electric clarinet. A fantastic piece of music that represents the best of Australian funky music (aussiefunk.blogspot.com).
