Goldfury
Quite possibly one of the most immersive sonic places I have gone to. It feels submerged in the dead heat of a night. The atmosphere is painstakingly maintained from start to finish and it never lifts. There is no "favourite tracks" game to play here; it is simply a sonic state that stretches from the dark twang desolation of Texas to the art rock echoes of modern day Brooklyn. For those unaware of Calla beyond their goth pop rock-like latter years, this and their self-titled debut are essential listens. Note- two different versions exist. The Young God version ends with an original and then a cover of U2's Promenade. The Quatermass version (including the vinyl) ends with a brief murky cover of Steve Miller's "Dear Mary" and then an extended track, "Subterrain," which gradually weathers and deteriorates the song into subtle pops and murmurs, scurries and bends over the span of 12 minutes. It is seamless and gorgeously executed in its deconstruction, recalling the explorative experiments of their first album, and a perfect and just end to the murky haze of atmosphere-rich slow core established over the first eight songs.
