Luke Solomon of the Freaks releases his solo album, THE DIFFERENCE ENGINE, as a showcase for his weirdo take on house. Slightly off-kilter, these tracks show a unique sensibility, as the tonal bits on the title track to the sax-driven jazz of "The Beat Goes." "Robots" goes down as smooth as single malt scotch, while "People, Places, Thoughts And Faces" and "Top, Bottom" get more traditional with the vocals, if not the actual music. But "Skin" delves deep, even with its high thrum, and it's a pity that "Martin, A Cello And Me" isn't longer, because even in its short run time, it shows delicious promise. "Out Of Control" brings forth a twinkling funk. "Open Fire" samples a bit of what sounds like William S. Burroughs speaking for a dervish of a track, though the spoken word on "The Darkest Secret" is less appealing. Luckily, the horn frenzy of "Liquid" makes up for any weaknesses elsewhere, as it circles back to the beginning. Quite an enjoyable journey.
