For their debut NEAR MISSES on the sorely missed ~scape label, Roam the Hello Clouds put the horns first on "Phases" as the skittery percussive instruments slowly creep in, whereas with "Geoff As The Hulk," the base of the song is established much earlier. The tracks here are understated, almost like fleeting images, as the echoing horn and spare instrumentation of "Death And Possible Dreams" or the barest sounds of "A Life Of Near Misses" show. But "Sprinter" has a livelier spirit to it, and the loops of "Uniform 64" set a foundation for the wanderings that go above, particularly as it pushes the horn into more interesting, free jazz places towards the end. Solid effort, if a little too airy.
