Edward Tudor-Pole always was something of a clever Dick - naming Tenpole Tudor’s debut album ‘Eddie, old Bob, Dick and Gary’ after the expression ‘any old Tom, Dick and Harry’. Bob, of course, being guitarist Bob Kingston, Dick Crippen the band’s bass player and Gary Long the drummer. But the story of this fantastic album begins with another clever Dick: Malcolm McLaren. When filming his mockumentary The Great Rock And Roll Swindle about the Sex Pistols in early-mid 1978 the band he had nurtured into chaos and notoriety was dead in all but name. With Johnny Rotten gone AWOL McLaren needed a singer pronto. Auditions were planned with Edward “Are these the auditions for Hamlet?” Tudor-Pole impressing McLaren most. And even though rehearsals with Tudor-Pole, Paul Cook, Steve Jones and stand-in bass player Andy Allen took place, the whole thing imploded when Vicious found himself in an American jail, accused of murdering his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. Vicious subsequently overdosed on heroin and died. The End. With the Pistols no more, Tudor-Pole formed Tenpole Tudor with Kingston, Crippen and Long who knew each other from The Visitors, a band in which Tudor-Pole had briefly guested as vocalist. The name Tenpole Tudor derived from a previous McLaren-brainwave rechristening Tudor-Pole to Ten Pole Tudor. Perhaps neither album nor band made a huge impact on musical history, but I consider Eddie, old Bob, Dick and Gary a hugely underrated, sizzling, energetic, punk-rock gem. And full of great songs it is, featuring even greater choruses and hooks, all begging you, no demanding you, to sing along. There have been clever Dicks-a-plenty accusing Tudor-Pole of not being able to sing, but just listen to the harmonies… damn you Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young – you are no match to Eddie, old Bob, Dick and Gary! Songs like Tell Me More, I Wish, Anticipation, There Are Boys, Three Bells In A Row… you cannot help but love ‘em. The album was released in 1980 and sold moderately well before disappearing off the musical radar. And then something interesting happened: Tenpole Tudor’s 1981 single Swords Of A Thousand Men peaked at #6. Keen to cash in, Stiff records remixed and released Wunderbar, from the Eddie, old Bob, Dick and Gary album, which had been released the previous year as a follow up single. Problem was, Stiff didn’t have a new album to back these singles up. So a clever Stiff Dick simply added Swords Of A Thousand Men as opening track to Eddie, old Bob, Dick and Gary, remixed a couple of other tracks, put a new cover on it and hey presto: a hit album peaking in May 1981 at #44 in the UK charts! However, believe me when I tell you it is the original version of the album that sums Tenpole Tudor up best and the one you need to listen to. It is cheap as chips and will give you pleasure for years.
