This fruitful collaboration with Jarboe has produced three extraordinary pieces of musical exploration, differentiated by rhythmic texture and atmosphere, along a darkwave spectrum. The Sun Falling tracks are evidently ritualistic music, meaning devotional music, and more specifically, in the pantheistic tradition. The title track ‘Sun Falling’ is the most overtly incantatory with tribal drums/percussion, guitar drones and ecstatic vocal expressions. The beat is brutal and industrial but the complex and rich percussion add a tribal flavour. Various forms of rapturous vocals interact with the drums and percussion, conjuring moods of extreme intensity.The longest piece, Atmospheric Conditions, has a hint of funk in the rhythms, and Middle Eastern influence in the vocals. Graced by a poetic recital, the track undergoes a shift from full sound to minimalism and near silence, to pick up and expand again. There is much beauty in its dream-like grooves. The final, Dust Storm, is an industrial symphony of darkness; a nightmarish vortex of howling gales, drones, rumbles, metallic noises and squalls of distortion in an ocean of reverb. The atmosphere is oppressive and the mood is one of overwhelming gloom. There’s not much human in it.
