So sad this gem has only been rereleased on vinyl. It deserves a CD issue!

Sometimes you don't really understand the politics of music reissues. A lot of useless crap has been reissued in luxurious digipacks with remastered sound and tons of bonus tracks, while a fundamental album of 1980s' underground electronics like this never even saw the light on CD! The first Borghesia LP is musically original and stimulating, although today inevitably showing the years in which it was recorded, and lyrically intense and dramatic. The title is the Slovenian translation of "Liebe, kälter als der Tod", a film by Fassbinder. It's not a chance, since Borghesia were gays and used a lot of leather-men aesthetics, both on LP covers and in the lyrics. "On", in particular, the album's highlight, is a very strong and effective representation of violent male BDSM, with an almost religious feeling "he bleeds on the altar, looking for benediction". The political side is not less disturbing, especially on "Kdo Je Ugasnil Luč", talking about red and black dictatorships and their ruthlessness, or the shocking "Tako Mladi": "so young and dead, floating on the bottom, the flag waves, while seagulls look for flesh bits". Their music is not standard EBM, don't expect Klinik or 242, this is a very strange mixture of sampled guitars, sometimes electrofunky rhythms (also to be massively found on KMFDM's early albums) and influences from Severed Heads and synthpop. Not as brilliant, original and influential as their compatriots Laibach, Borghesia were however a great band and would today deserve to be available to more people, especially this excellent debut album and the mini-LP "Njihovi Zakoni, Naša Živiljena".

Different opinions, man. Take it easy. I read from your reviews that you dislike Laibach, especially their latest albums and artistic direction. Won't call you ignorant for that. I love Borghesia, down to 1990-91. I understand in Slovenia and ex-Yugoslavia they must be seen as heroes, but you can't deny that Laibach had much more influence abroad and are still today a driving force, doing international tours, playing at big festivals outside the usual goth/industrial pigeonhole, being invited in North Korea, etc. They sold out to the music mainstream? Maybe. But try asking how many people in the world discovered that Slovenia exists thank to Laibach, for example. Borghesia and their recent hard rock gigs, especially, can't stand in comparison, I'm sorry.

Hate to discuss it this way, but saying Borghesia is "not as brilliant, original (!!!) and influential" is downright ignorant. Not only that they were brilliant, original and influential, Borghesia used their own subversive tactics, passing uncensored entirely at the time when Laibach were forced in exile. Laibach were definitely luckier in terms of greater international exposure and (political) connections... not that the two were ever competing between them - both groups are equally important or to put it simple, Borghesia is equally part of "créme de la créme" of Slovene post-punk avantgarde scene. And while some of their later studio work isn't on par with their best, in my opinion their entire discography remains conceptually stronger and way more consistent than that of Laibach's.
