Paul Desmond, the great composer of Dave Brubeck's Quintet jazz classic "Take Ten", released this LP in the 60's, when almost every jazzman was experimenting with Brasillian Music -mainly Bossa-Nova- in order to release some comercial works to make big money. Honestly, i think that was the main reason of the Brasillian explosion in american Jazz in the 60's. Some fine jazz guys made horrific pop records with Bossa.But Paul Desmond didn't fall in there: this release is fine as hell. The composers and the arrangers made excelent brasillian adaptations of nice melodies, to be played in a jazzy mood. But this isn't jazz. It's filled with strings and horns. (The same thing happened with the Guitar master, Wes Montgomery). Is a very comercial release, but, instead of sounding crappy, it's excellent. Filled with nostalgic songs. And the interpretations of the musicians are supreme. Nothing dull in here. Maybe for a jazz purist, the only problem will be the orchestra backing up the smooth Sax of Desmond. For other people, that will be the "catch" of the record. Anyway, "From The Hot Afternoon" is a must for the Brasillian music lovers and, poorly, for jazz listeners.The only example i could give about a similar record would be the Brasillian years of Stan Getz. But this is far more comercial.
