Great compilation that has some amazing tracks on there – Silver Blade, Locust, Grey Odyssey, Secrets, Mute. And I think I’m right in saying that most of that lot were only on the album and never got released as singles. There’s also a number of tracks in the compilation from the Prototype 1990’s back catalogue that are worth checking out if you don’t own the singles. As someone else has said the Grooverider mix CD is pretty poor, his mixing in parts is really disappointing. A bedroom DJ with a reasonable amount of beatmatching skill could do a lot better than Grooverider’s effort here.

Can only agree that City Lights should have got released. But this LP was a ground breaker and deserves to be in the collection. I remember hearing Groovrider smash it up at Tribal Gathering with these tracks. If only such a collection of ground breakers could be released now..

Frankly this is the CD you want out of the bunch and the price they go for warrants that. Warned the radio edit is not my favourite version, but the track isn't a favourite of mine anyway. Silver Blade, Locust, Secrets are all top tracks, Silver Blade should be essential for any real head, but the main reason for getting this release has got to be for Dom and Optical's epic remix of Still. As far as i'm aware this is the only release with the track included, and its well worth it.

Great album and considering it's oldskool era as it's from 1997 I think it still sounds as fresh today as it was back then so Grooverider has done a good job with this album as it stands the test of time and not only that as it never gets boring no matter how much you listen to it. An album flooded and plagued with nothing but wicked tunes and my favourites on here are "Secrets" from John B, the "Locust" tune from Ed Rush & Co (my way of putting it easier lol) and of course "Silver Blade" by the legendary Dillinja. The godfather of drum & bass shows us why he's called exactly that with this excellent album and some tunes sound more on the jungle tip than others but I like how Grooverider takes us on a non-stop drum & bass journey. Some of these d&b tracks to me sound quite dreamy and I like that on any album but more importantly Grooverider never ruins the album with cheesey tracks which I've witnessed by other artists but won't mention names. I thoroughly recommend this album to all those who are new to the drum & bass scene or music. Great tunes at their best and I've read reviews about Rider not mixing well on this album but I think he's done well so I ignore all negativity. This is one of the best drum & bass albums ever released and d&b probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Grooverider so all haters please jog on, grow up and show some respect... Great album from the best dj in the genre!

The album that keeps giving. I have this on lp and have played it solid since the late 90's. Silver blade, locust, subway, going gets tough, threshold all monster tracks some I don't think you can get anywhere else on vinyl... I didn't even realise john b secrets was on the album until a few years ago. I think I might go and pick up another copy... This and the other 96/97 prototype releases - Years ahead of its time.

John B. - Secrets. Nothing else. To this day.That track made D' n' B for me. It was all Drum n Bass had. It couldn't get heavier, funkier, dancier...Nothing else.And yes, to this day, the styles have evolved, for the better, for the worse. This track, singularly, will remain what it is: perfect.

This Lp includes two of my favourite dnb-tunes ever! Dillinja - Silver blade Beautiful atmospheres, and a roaring amen smashing drop...Hard to put in words what feelings go through my head when I listen to this, mostly it just tells me something how life is... Optical - Grey odyssey This track is THE funk! Rolling beats with dreamy synths, just what I love!

Silver Blade - Huddling beneath a baron rocky outcrop, the last swathes of daylight feebly drown amidst the swelling oil slick slithering its way eastward into the starless cerulean sky. Forked lightening momentarily illuminates the bleak rock-strewn landscapes, an infinite expanse stretched out like the blackened frothing waves of a rabid ocean. This track summons such vivid imagery with every listen. Back in ‘96-’97 amongst a barrage of ‘tech-step’, this tune sounded so fresh it was hard to comprehend. Whilst remaining as dark as anything around, if not darker, it sliced the blueprint two-step sound to shreds. The beats pounce unexpectedly after the relatively subdued intro, actually sounding metallic - like swords clashing. Midway, an inexplicably malevolent intensity descends upon the track, a pervading sense of foreboding, much like the eerie calm before the storm; eight bars later the whole track is plunged into an apocalyptic, distorted reece-bass crescendo. It was this kind of experimentation and intensity in his tracks that made Dillinja so prolific an artist and ensured he remained alongside only a handful of others at the cutting edge of the Drum & Bass sound. Many people credit Boymerang with being the first to use this break, but as far as I am aware it was Dillinja who first used it – and on this track.

Great review, although just to correct you on the very last bit, it was actually Boymerang who MADE the break (which he let Dillinja use) - this is why this break is generally known as "the boymerang" :)
