IAN BODDY - THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE (Something Else SER 004) CD 61mIan's latest CD seems to have confused some people, being an album that includes almost every style he's tried out over the past 10 years, from Vangelis style anthems and purely atmospheric pieces onto blatant high-drive drum/sequencer music. But, no matter what one thinks the title, THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE, is certainly very apt, and despite the initial thoughts that Ian was trying to put something for everyone into it, there is a kind of logic to it all. Like in a Salvador Dali painting, in which the elements may seem unrelated, the more you examine it the greater the overall concept reveals itself. For an album that flows as one continuous suite, THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE covers a hell of a lot of ground, and apart from the thirteen credited tracks there are lots of link themes and atmospheric "doodlings" that weld the whole together. Actually, the first three tracks run as one suite in a manner that reminds me of how side 1 of Jean Michel Jarre's OXYGENE was put together. But after that the flow does get a bit shaky, and for me the uptempo sequencer/ drum tracks that hearken back to his PHOENIX album, are not really to my taste, that's except for the very Arabian sounding Cassiopeia's Dream which is quite original and fresh. Not surprisingly, the three-part title work (at 10½ minutes) is the album's highlight with its rich choral synthetics and vocoder recalling Didier Bocquet's SEQUENCES.As there's nothing totally bizarre or radical here, I'm sure the already dedicated Ian Boddy fan with love this. And, yes, it certainly beats the pants off the new Tangerine Dream album!review by Alan Freeman in Audion magazine #25 (June 1993)
