Small Black
It is the year 1979. I remember, walking down the street, seeing this record in the vitrine of a recordstore. Mmmh... shall i buy it? The sleeve looks so cheap. Will it be good?Maybe you don't know this, but in 1979, the hit Rap-O Clap-O shook the world, together with another record. This record is Rapper's Delight from The Sugarhill Gang. In numerous countries they both went to the top of the hitlists. Rap music broke through to the mainstream for the first time. In each and every club and disco they both were floorfillers. I went into the recordstore and bought the record. On my way home i wondered, will the whole record be good?Putting the needle on the record, the first heavenly discosounds filled the room. The uneven handclap, the swinging rhythm guitar and the wonderful disco "Pieuw Pow" sounds (sorry i don't know how you call this). The voice of Joe flows silkysmooth through the songs together with the lovely backing vocals. Nice breaks also. Most of the songs are mixed and how well mixed they are. Could it be Larry Levan, who mixed them together? What a lovely bassliness. And after hearing the whole record i knew it. This is one of the greatest discorecords ever. Each and every song just great except maybe for "Always And Forever". A unsteady sung ballad written by Rod Temperton. Now, 29 years later, sitting behind my desk, i still find it great and i will not sell it for any price.A good thing i bought it, way back in 1980.
