I really like this album. It's something I've even kept in pretty constant rotation since I've bought the LP, which is a habit I rarely permit. Very well played and extremely well recorded. I love the instrumental passages, and the compositions are all different enough to keep me happily engaged. The segues are fluid and really give the album a cohesive, journey-like feel — which is something I find lacking in much of today's song-oriented music. I also like the addition of the Al Lover-style samples that are sprinkled in. The art design is intriguing and something I believe this band will continue to produce to great effect on albums to come. The only thing I can offer in the way of a critique is how abrasive the female vocalist can be. I understand and have a taste for a variety of metal styles of singing, but she seriously just screams her lyrics point blank and it actually seems to lessen the effect of a band that is otherwise playing some very intense music - but maybe that's an impression that will fade over more listens. It also doesn't plague every track ("The Light Within" is far more jarring than, "Talk To God" or "Goatchild" for instance). The final statement I can make is that I find it pretty peculiar that Sub Pop became the American rights holder for this release. GOAT got a ton of good press when their first album came out, so it makes sense that Sub Pop would attempt to latch onto that hype, but it just seems like the wrong fit. I'm certain they were in a position to pick and choose which label to work with, so I just feel like there was one (Thrill Jockey, Trouble In Mind, LITA, even Drag City) that would've been a better home for what this band does. All in all, a kickass release that perfectly compliments their excellent debut, making me wonder what's next...?
