The quiet groove of STEP UP, Varano's debut, takes a few notes from the funk playbook with the title track, while pulling the strings for the mid-tempo breaks of "Music is My Soul," aided, in no small part, by Diane Charlemagne's powerhouse vocals. Some Indian instrumentation creeps into the sadder "Dead End Street" and the happier "Universal Rhythm," but the rap on "Leaving My Troubles Behind" falls flat on its face. Luckily the folksy start and solid thump of "I'll Get The Better Of You" picks itself up and dusts itself off. The funk returns with a country-blues twist for "Take My Hand" and "Indifference" ends the album on a slinky, jazzy note, with Charlemagne once again at the helm. It's a nice finishing touch, though I would have liked more oomph to the songs overall.
