Dusty Grooves review:Funky funky Lou Rawls – a collection of work from Lou's landmark years with David Axelrod! Even before Axe showed up on the scene, Lou was still one heck of a great singer – with a voice that could easily handle the farthest reaches of jazz, soul, and gospel – but it was really Axelrod who helped Lou's great sound stick, with some equal (and often under-credited assistance) from arranger HB Barnum! The pair took Lou's vocals, and set them up in a groove that was hip, syncopated, and often filled with a slightly more righteous quality than Lou had been using – a perfect style for the end of the 60s, handled in a way that quickly bridged the worlds of soul, rock, and pop – and which often had a funky undercurrent that's made the tracks quite appealing to today's sample-searching crowd! This well-done collection brings together tunes from 9 different Axelrod/Rawls albums – complete with some great notes that help unlock the magic of the work, and a total of 25 numbers that include "Evil Woman", "Soul Serenade", "It's An Uphill Climb", "How Can That Be", "Can You Dig It (monologue)", "Take Me For What I Am", "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)", "For What It's Worth", "It's An Uphill Climb To The Bottom", "Dead End Street", and "Your Good Thing".
