i was just reading martin davidson's liner notes for the SME "for you to share" LP and he definitely mentions this LP as an SME proper LP, giving it the title "Oliv I". This makes me think the title is properly: John Stevens / Spontaneous Music Ensemble "Oliv I" rather than John Stevens 'Spontaneous Music Ensemble". Did not want to institute this change to duel listing without checking first.

It was an SME 'proper' album. The reason it was called John Stevens 'Spontaneous Music Ensemble' was because John got the recording contract deal with Marmalade and producer Giorgio Gomelsky was 'kind of' managing him (can't remember whether there was an actual management contract through). Paragon Publicity/ Marmalade Records were Giorgio's companies. Giorgio transcended the boundaries of Jazz/ the development of Jazz/ Rock/ prog Rock so lines were blurred between musical forms. They handled the Blossom Toes, Keith Tippett, John McLaughlin, Brian Auger/ Julie Driscoll and such as well as SME via John. But it was all short lived - I think it fell foul of marketing targets from Polydor. But anyway, Georgio's grounding in the rock/ pop business meant marketing using and identity, preferable as an individual. So, this was John rather than the SME as a whole. In any case John was the common denominator of the SME. But this is why the cover photo was also only of John. I took the photo used on the sleeve by the way and was around the group and all this...
