I first became aware of Witch Hats after a friend of mine left their EP ‘Solarium Down the Causeway’ in my car. I had a long drive and it was the only CD I had in my car. I drive from Brisbane to Sydney for a weekend and when arrived, I bought their debut CD ‘Cellulite Soul’ at JB Hi-Fi to listen to on the way home. On the EP I enjoyed “Stomach in Your Hair” – for some reason I kept playing it over and over. I guess I just enjoyed the grittiness and unified messiness of its chorus. On ‘Cellulite Soul’, the opening notes of the first track “Before I Weigh” reminded me of some middle-eastern sounding influence… the track is quite oddly composed and the vocals are so distantly sung, it’s quite haunting. Aside from “Before I Weigh”, other standout tracks on the album for me are definitely “I Can’t Stay At Home”, “Hellhole” and “Climbing Up Yr Cable”.“I Can’t Stay At Home” reminds me of what post-punk used to sound like. It reminds me of The Clash song “Hateful” from ‘London Calling’. I like the unexpected change at the end of the song with singer Kris Buscombe shouting “You’re responsible!” – it made me feel like I was 15 and pointlessly rebelling again.Overall, I really enjoyed this album. It definitely has some dry moments, such as tracks like “Ma Lord” and “Potato Feet”, but most of the album is very concise. A solid debut album. I still listen to “Hellhole” whenever I get back into my car.
